The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) stands as a beacon of modern and contemporary art, holding the distinction of being the first museum on the West Coast dedicated solely to 20th-century art. Founded in 1935, SFMOMA has evolved into an internationally recognized institution, boasting a collection of over 33,000 works encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, and media arts. SFMOMA's history is marked by its commitment to showcasing innovative and challenging art. The museum notably presented the first solo exhibitions of influential artists such as Arshile Gorky, Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Motherwell. This pioneering spirit continues today through an ever-expanding collection and dynamic exhibitions that feature both modern masters and emerging artists. The museum's collection is organized into curatorial areas with permanent and rotating exhibitions. Visitors can explore architecture and design, media arts, and contemporary painting and sculpture. SFMOMA also partners with the Fisher Art Foundation to display a significant collection of postwar and contemporary art. The Pritzker Center for Photography occupies a large part of the third floor. SFMOMA provides free access to 45,000 square feet of art-filled public spaces, offering a taste of its collection without requiring a ticket. The museum also offers free admission to Bay Area residents on the first Thursday of each month.
