Discover more about Point Bonita Lighthouse

Point Bonita Lighthouse, a sentinel overlooking the Golden Gate, has been a crucial aid to navigation for over 150 years. Completed in 1855, it was the third lighthouse on the West Coast, built to guide ships safely through the often foggy and turbulent waters at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. Originally, the lighthouse was positioned atop a high ridge, approximately 300 feet above sea level. However, its location proved problematic, as the light was frequently obscured by the region's characteristic high fog. In 1877, the lighthouse was relocated to its current position, a lower elevation at the tip of Point Bonita. This move required the construction of a hand-carved tunnel through the rock, a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the builders. Today, visitors can explore Point Bonita Lighthouse by traversing a half-mile trail that includes a steep descent, a tunnel, and a suspension bridge. The lighthouse itself offers exhibits and historic photos, providing insight into the life of a lighthouse keeper. The views from the lighthouse are breathtaking, encompassing the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, and the vast Pacific Ocean. The surrounding area is also rich in natural beauty, with opportunities for whale watching and observing harbor seals. Point Bonita is more than just a scenic landmark; it's a living piece of maritime history, offering a tangible connection to the past and a reminder of the importance of lighthouses in ensuring safe passage for ships.
