Discover more about Memorial Church

Stanford Memorial Church, located in the heart of Stanford University's Main Quad, is a stunning testament to love, faith, and architectural grandeur. Jane Stanford commissioned the church as a memorial to her husband, Leland Stanford, and it was dedicated in 1903. The church has been called the 'University's architectural crown jewel'. The church's design, by Charles A. Coolidge, blends Romanesque and Byzantine elements, drawing inspiration from churches in the Venice region. The exterior features a magnificent mosaic facade depicting Christ welcoming the righteous into the Kingdom of God. Inside, visitors are greeted by walls covered in mosaics, stained-glass windows illustrating biblical stories, and intricately carved details. The mosaics were created by Maurizio Camerino's team, who worked for three years on the project. The stained-glass windows were made by J. and R. Lamb of New York. Stanford Memorial Church has five pipe organs, allowing musicians to produce diverse styles of organ music. The church has withstood major earthquakes in 1906 and 1989, undergoing extensive renovations after each. Today, it continues to serve the spiritual needs of the university as a non-denominational church, hosting multi-faith services and events. Visitors can explore the church's art and architecture, and attend weekly ecumenical worship services.
