From San Mateo, head to the Caltrain station located at 2 N B St, San Mateo, CA 94401. Purchase a ticket to San Francisco. Take the Caltrain northbound towards San Francisco. The train will take approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the San Francisco Caltrain Station, exit the station and walk towards 4th Street. Turn right on 4th Street and walk to the Muni Metro station at 4th and King. Take the T or N line towards the Embarcadero and get off at the Montgomery St station. From there, walk north on Montgomery St until you reach 3rd St. Turn left on 3rd St, and continue walking until you arrive at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art located at 151 3rd St.

Continue on El Camino Real until you reach the intersection with 25th Avenue, then turn left. Follow 25th Avenue until it connects to the San Francisco Bay Trail. Stay on the Bay Trail which will lead you to the San Francisco waterfront. Once you reach the Embarcadero, follow it north until you reach the intersection with 3rd St. Turn left on 3rd St, and you will find the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art at 151 3rd St.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk from San Mateo to San Francisco. Start at the San Mateo Caltrain station and follow the directions for the Caltrain as outlined in the Public Transit section.
