Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park is a captivating destination that blends history, natural beauty, and coastal charm. Located south of Pescadero, the park's centerpiece is the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest in the United States. Named after the clipper ship *Carrier Pigeon*, which wrecked nearby in 1853, the lighthouse began operating in 1872. Its original purpose was to guide ships safely through the treacherous waters. The lighthouse boasts a first-order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, which was first lit on November 15, 1872. Although the original lens is no longer in use, it is on display in the fog signal building. While the lighthouse tower is currently closed for restoration, visitors can still explore the grounds and delve into the park's rich history. The coastal areas surrounding Pigeon Point Light Station are teeming with life. Marine mammals, such as seals and whales, can be spotted from the shore. The intertidal zone is home to diverse plant and animal life. The park offers various activities, including hiking trails, bird watching, and tide pooling.
