Discover more about Memorial Church

Stanford Memorial Church, often called "MemChu," stands as the architectural crown jewel of Stanford University. Jane Stanford commissioned the church in memory of her husband, Leland Stanford, with construction completed in 1903. The church is non-denominational, reflecting the Stanfords' desire to create a welcoming space for all faiths. The building's design, by Charles A. Coolidge, blends Romanesque and Byzantine styles, drawing inspiration from churches in the Venice region. The interior is richly decorated with mosaics and stained glass windows based on religious paintings admired by the Stanfords in Europe. The exterior mosaic on the north facade depicts Christ welcoming the righteous. Inside, visitors can admire the detailed mosaics covering the walls and the stained-glass windows. The church also houses five pipe organs, allowing for diverse musical performances. Throughout its history, Memorial Church has served as a spiritual center for the university. It has also withstood two major earthquakes, in 1906 and 1989, with extensive renovations following each. Today, the church hosts multi-faith services, denominational and non-denominational Christian services, and various campus events. Visitors are welcome to explore the church's art and architecture during open hours.
