Discover more about Captain Pedro Fages Trail

The Captain Pedro Fages Trail historical marker commemorates the expedition led by Captain Pedro Fages in 1772. As the commandante at Monterey, Fages sought a passage across the San Francisco Bay. Accompanied by Franciscan missionary Juan Crespí, soldiers, a muleteer, and an Indian servant, Fages trekked along the Carquinez Strait, venturing eastward towards Antioch before turning back. This expedition marked the first recorded exploration by white men of what would become Contra Costa County. The group passed the marker's location and camped near present-day Danville on March 31, 1772. The San Ramon Valley Historical Society erected the plaque in 1972 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of this exploration. The marker is located at the intersection of Danville Boulevard and El Portal. It serves as a reminder of the early exploration of the East Bay region and California's rich history.
