Getting There

• Public Bus

  Start your journey from anywhere in Ibagué. Head to the main bus terminal, Terminal de Transporte de Ibagué, which is located on Avenida Ambalá. Once you arrive at the terminal, look for buses heading to the town of Cajamarca or directly to Volcán Cerro Machín. Ensure to confirm with the bus driver if they stop near the base of the volcano. The fare is typically around 5,000 COP. The bus ride should take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

• Hiking

  Once you arrive at the drop-off point near the base of Volcán Cerro Machín, you will need to hike to the summit. There are marked trails that lead up the volcano, which is well-maintained. The hike can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to carry enough water, snacks, and wear proper hiking shoes. It's advisable to start your hike early in the morning to avoid any afternoon rains and to enjoy the views from the top.

• Local Guides

  If you're unsure about hiking alone, consider hiring a local guide from Ibagué or at the base of the volcano. They can provide valuable information about the trail and the area. You can usually find guides at the bus terminal or at the entrance to the hiking trails. The typical cost for a guide is around 50,000 to 100,000 COP depending on the length of the hike and the services provided.

• Return Trip

  After enjoying your time at the summit, make your way back down to the base. Follow the same trail you took up. Once you reach the base, look for the same bus that dropped you off or ask locals for information about the bus schedule back to Ibagué. Make sure to check the last bus timings to avoid being stranded. The return fare will be similar, around 5,000 COP.
