Getting There

  • Driving

    From downtown Gunnison, head south on Main Street (Highway 135). Turn left onto W Airport Rd, following signs for the airport. Continue onto Gold Basin Rd (County Road 38) for approximately 2.8 miles. The main entrance and parking area for Hartman Rocks will be on your right. There are no fees for parking.

  • Biking

    From Gunnison, bike south on County Road 38 (Gold Basin Road) for approximately 3 miles. The Hartman Rocks Base Area parking lot will be located on the west side of the road. The ride is mostly flat, following the road along the airport. Be aware of vehicle traffic on the road. There are bike racks available at the parking area.

Several designated climbing routes are established, though climbers should be aware that bolts and anchors are not maintained. For those seeking a longer stay, Hartman Rocks offers 50 primitive campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. These sites provide a chance to immerse yourself in the area's natural beauty and enjoy the peace and quiet of the high desert. During the winter months, Hartman Rocks transforms into a Nordic skiing and fat biking destination. Sixteen miles of trails are groomed for classic and skate skiing, while some singletrack trails are groomed for fat biking.
