Discover more about Mount Goliath Natural Area & Dos Chappell Nature Center

Mount Goliath Natural Area, nestled within the Mount Blue Sky Recreation Area, is a 160-acre preserve dedicated to the Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine and the delicate alpine tundra. Located a short 35-mile drive from Denver, this area offers visitors a chance to witness the resilience of life at high altitudes. The star attractions are the Rocky Mountain bristlecone pines, some of which are estimated to be between 700 and 1,600 years old. These hardy trees have adapted to survive in harsh conditions, including strong winds, thin soils, and extreme temperatures. A quarter-mile Bristlecone Loop Trail meanders through the grove, allowing visitors to observe these ancient sentinels up close. The Dos Chappell Nature Center features exhibits that explain the unique adaptations of plants and animals to the sub-alpine and alpine environments. Here, you can learn about the history of the Mount Blue Sky Road and the challenges of life at high altitude. The center also marks the start of the M. Walter Pesman Trail, which climbs from the subalpine zone into the alpine tundra at 12,152 feet, showcasing over 250 species of alpine and subalpine wildflowers. The area is a collaborative effort between the Denver Botanic Gardens, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and the U.S. Forest Service. Starting September 3, 2024, and continuing through 2025, the Mount Blue Sky Highway is closed to motorized and non-motorized travel due to construction. Access to the summit is only available via hiking trails. The area is scheduled to reopen Memorial Day weekend 2026.
