Discover more about Hanging Lake Trailhead

Hanging Lake Trail is a popular hiking destination located in Glenwood Canyon, about 7 miles east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This National Natural Landmark is known for its stunning turquoise lake, gentle waterfalls, and unique travertine geology. The 1.2-mile trail ascends approximately 1,200 feet, making it a moderately strenuous hike. The path follows Dead Horse Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River, and features rocky steps, switchbacks, and several bridges. The average round-trip hike takes about 3 hours. Hanging Lake was formed by a geological fault that resulted in a travertine deposition, creating the lake's vibrant color. Bridal Veil Falls feeds the lake, depositing minerals that contribute to its turquoise hue. Spouting Rock, another waterfall located above Hanging Lake, allows visitors to walk behind the cascading water. To protect the fragile ecosystem, a permit system is in place for all visitors. The trail has undergone reconstruction to improve its resilience to natural events such as mudslides. Historically, the area was discovered by a man searching for gold in Glenwood Canyon. It later served as a homestead and private retreat before being purchased by Glenwood Springs. In the 1940s, a resort and cafe operated near the lake until the construction of Interstate-70.
