    From Buena Vista's Main Street, head west on Highway 306 (Cottonwood Pass Road) for 6 miles. Turn left onto County Road 344 (Cottonwood Lake Road) and continue for 3 miles to reach the lake and picnic area. Note that CR 344 is a dirt road and can be rough. During the fee season (May-September), there is a $10 fee to use the picnic area, unless camping within a Salida Ranger District developed campground. Parking is available at the picnic area.

While there are no showers available, restrooms are provided for visitors' convenience. The picnic area operates on a seasonal fee basis, typically from May to September. During the winter months, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The road to Cottonwood Lake is usually plowed, ensuring accessibility throughout the year. Cottonwood Lake also serves as one of the water sources for the town of Buena Vista.
