  • Driving

From Alamosa, drive east on US Highway 160 for 15 miles until you see signs for Great Sand Dunes National Park. Turn left onto Colorado State Highway 150 and drive north for 10.5 miles. Look for the sign for Zapata Falls on your right. Turn right onto the unpaved Zapata Falls Road (also known as Lake of the Falls Road) and drive 3 miles to the parking lot. Discover more about Zapata Falls

Zapata Falls is a hidden gem located near the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. This 25-foot waterfall is concealed within a cave-like grotto carved over thousands of years by South Zapata Creek. The falls are situated on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest and south of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The adventure begins with a mildly steep, 0.5-mile hike from the parking area. The trail offers breathtaking views of the San Luis Valley, the Great Sand Dunes, and the surrounding mountains. The final approach to the falls requires fording the stream, often through cold, snow-melt water, and navigating slippery rocks. Zapata Falls is a popular destination year-round. In the summer, the falls provide a refreshing escape from the heat, while in the winter, the waterfall freezes into a stunning column of ice, attracting experienced ice climbers. The area is also a nesting site for black swifts, one of the few known breeding locations for this species in Colorado. Zebulon Pike and his exploring team camped near South Zapata Creek in January 1807. The creek is a geologic wonder, as its water disappears underground when it reaches the valley and never joins another stream.
