Walking
From the Dunes Parking Lot, walk south along the Medano Creek bed for approximately 2 miles (3.2 km). Star Dune will come into view as a massive, pyramid-shaped dune. From there, ascend the ridge to the summit. Be aware that there is no marked trail, and the hike can take 6-9 hours round trip. There are no fees associated with accessing the dune beyond the park entrance fee.
