Discover more about Zapata Ranch Preserve

Zapata Ranch Preserve offers a unique glimpse into the American West, where the traditions of ranching meet modern conservation efforts. Owned by The Nature Conservancy, the 103,000-acre ranch is located on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, bordering the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. This vast landscape encompasses high desert grasslands, alpine forests, wetlands, and even sand dunes, creating a haven for diverse wildlife, including a 2,000-strong bison herd. The ranch's history stretches back to the Spanish conquistadors, later falling under Mexican rule before becoming part of the U.S. after the Mexican-American War. Originally a sheep ranch, it transitioned to cattle ranching in the early 20th century. In 1999, The Nature Conservancy acquired the land, recognizing its biological significance and aiming to demonstrate how ranching can coexist with conservation. Visitors can immerse themselves in ranch life, participating in activities like moving livestock, monitoring water levels, and learning about holistic land management practices. Guided tours offer opportunities to see the bison herd and explore the historic Medano Ranch headquarters, with buildings dating back to the 1870s. The preserve also features a one-mile hiking trail through cottonwood groves and wetlands, providing stunning views and wildlife viewing opportunities. Zapata Ranch offers workshops and retreats centered around photography, horsemanship, and ecology.
