Discover more about Georgetown Loop Railroad & Mining Park - Silver Plume Depot

The Georgetown Loop Railroad, located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of 19th-century railway engineering. Completed in 1884, this narrow-gauge railroad was designed to connect the mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume, which were just two miles apart but separated by a significant elevation difference of over 600 feet. The solution was a four-and-a-half-mile stretch of track that loops back on itself, climbing over steep terrain with sharp curves and impressive trestle bridges. The most iconic feature is the Devil's Gate High Bridge, which allows the train to cross over Clear Creek Canyon. The route gains 640 feet in elevation. Today, the Georgetown Loop Railroad operates as a heritage railway, offering visitors a scenic and historical journey. Passengers can board at either the Silver Plume Depot or the Devil's Gate Station in Georgetown. The train ride itself is a highlight, but many visitors also opt for a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, located midway along the route. This tour takes you into a mine tunnel bored in the 1870s, where guides share the history of silver mining in the area. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a popular attraction for families, history buffs, and anyone seeking a unique Colorado experience.
