The NCA is rich in geological and paleontological resources, spanning 600 million years, and also holds many cultural and historic sites. Hiking and backpacking are popular, with trails like the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and the Tabeguache Trail winding through the area. The 30 miles of the Gunnison River that flow through the NCA provide opportunities for fishing and boating. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, golden eagles, and other native species. Camping is permitted in designated sections of the park, with both developed campgrounds and dispersed camping options available. Popular spots include Big Dominguez Campground and Potholes Recreation Site. For those seeking a more rugged experience, the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness offers opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation. ATV riding is popular in Cactus Park, with miles of marked trails for off-roaders. The NCA's diverse landscape also supports a variety of rare plants, including the Colorado hookless cactus and the Grand Junction milkvetch. Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the area's natural beauty and protect its fragile ecosystem.
