Getting There

  • Public Transport

    The nearest public transportation to Tenafly Nature Center is the Rockland Coaches' Bus Line Nos. 9/9A/9T/9TA, which stops at Montammy Drive along Route 9W. From there, walk south on the shoulder of 9W, turn right onto Hudson Avenue, and continue straight to the Center (approximately a mile). NJ Transit Bus 166 also stops at Hudson Ave and Prospect St. From there, walk east on Hudson Ave for about 10 minutes to reach the nature center. Bus fare is approximately $2.90.

  • Driving

    Tenafly Nature Center is located at 313 Hudson Ave, Tenafly, NJ 07670. Parking is available in the center's parking lot. However, parking may be limited during peak hours or special events. Parking is also permitted on Hudson Avenue. Note that access to and from the parking lot may be unavailable during camp drop-off and pick-up times (weekdays from June 23-August 29 between 8:45–9:15 AM and 3:00–3:30 PM).

  • Walking

    From downtown Tenafly, the nature center is accessible by walking north along Hudson Avenue. Be aware that Hudson Avenue has a steep incline leading up to the center.

Tenafly Nature Center, a non-profit nature preserve in Bergen County, New Jersey, has been fostering an appreciation for nature since 1961. Encompassing nearly 400 acres of wooded land, the center serves as a sanctuary, offering a peaceful respite from the daily grind. The nature center features a diverse range of ecosystems, including woodlands, wetlands, streams, and Pfister's Pond, attracting over 100 species of birds and various mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Visitors can explore over seven miles of marked trails, ranging in difficulty, that wind through mature forests. Key points of interest include an old-growth forest and the Discovery Center, which hosts interactive exhibits and natural history programs. Tenafly Nature Center offers various activities, including hiking, bird watching, wildlife observation, and seasonal programs. The center also cares for permanently injured animals that cannot be released back into the wild. The trails are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. The visitor center is open daily, except major holidays. Originally farmland, the area was transformed into a nature center, emphasizing conservation, environmental education, and recreation. In 1961, the Tenafly Nature Center Association was formed. The Redfield Building Visitors' Center was completed in 1966.
