Getting There

  • Driving

    From La Fortuna, drive approximately 30 minutes to Arenal Volcano National Park. Instead of heading to the main entrance, continue past it and take the sharp right at the first fork in the road. The Peninsula Sector ranger station is a few minutes down this bumpy dirt road. Parking is free with your park entrance fee.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are available from La Fortuna to the Peninsula Sector. A taxi ride will cost around $25 USD. Ensure the driver knows you want to go to the 'Sector Peninsula' as it is separate from the main entrance.

Venture to the Peninsula Sector of Arenal Volcano National Park for a serene escape into nature's grandeur. This sector, a newer addition to the park, distinguishes itself with breathtaking views of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake, and the iconic Arenal Volcano. The trails here are mostly paved and relatively flat, making it an ideal choice for families with young children, visitors with limited mobility, or anyone seeking a less strenuous hike. The Peninsula Sector offers two primary trails: Los Miradores trail which is 1.2 km (.7 miles) and El Tororoi trail which is 600 meters (.4 miles) one way. Both are well-marked and easy to navigate, winding through lush vegetation and leading to viewpoints that showcase the volcano's perfectly conical shape and the expansive lake. The sector is less crowded than the main visitor center, providing a more intimate experience with nature. An observation tower offers spectacular views of the volcano and lake. While the Peninsula Sector may not offer the up-close encounters with lava fields found in the Volcano Sector, it compensates with its accessibility and stunning panoramic views. It's a place to breathe in the fresh air, appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape, and perhaps catch a glimpse of local wildlife, including various bird species and monkeys. Currently, there is construction to add a gift shop, cafe, accessible path and sightseeing platform.
