Driving
From Puerto Jiménez, the most common access point, a 4x4 vehicle is necessary to navigate the rough roads to Carate. The drive is approximately 1.5-2 hours. Be prepared for river crossings, especially during the rainy season. Once in Carate, La Leona Eco Lodge is a walk away. Luggage can be left at the 'base camp' near the Carate airstrip and transported to the lodge. Walking to the lodge involves either a beach route (check tide times) or a forest trail. There are no tolls. Parking is available in Carate near the airstrip, though it may be limited.

A 'collectivo' (shared taxi) runs from Puerto Jiménez to Carate, taking approximately 2.5 hours. This is a more budget-friendly option, but can be slow due to frequent stops. From Carate, follow the walking directions to La Leona Eco Lodge. The cost for the collectivo is around $10-15 USD. Be aware that the collectivo schedule can be unreliable, so check in advance.
