Discover more about Ploče Gate

Ploče Gate, historically known as Vrata od Ploča, serves as the main eastern entrance to Dubrovnik's captivating Old Town. Constructed in the 14th century, it is a vital part of the city's ancient fortifications. While less elaborate than the Pile Gate on the western side, it shares similar defensive characteristics, featuring both inner and outer sections. Originally, the gate included a wooden drawbridge that was raised at night to protect the city. Over time, this was replaced with a stone bridge that connects to the Revelin Fortress, enhancing the city's defenses. The outer gate was renovated in 1628 by Mihajlo Hranjac, further fortifying it. Above the inner gate stands a statue of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron saint, holding a model of the city, symbolizing his protection. Today, thousands of tourists and locals pass through Ploče Gate daily, accessing Stradun, the main street of Dubrovnik. The gate provides access to beaches and hotels in the Ploče area. The walled city of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, continues to inspire filmmakers and storytellers, having been featured in projects like "Game of Thrones".
