Discover more about Jesuit Stairs

The Jesuit Stairs, located in the southern part of Dubrovnik's Old Town, offer a captivating blend of history, architecture, and pop culture. Constructed in the 18th century, the stairs were designed by Roman architect Pietro Passalacqua and serve as a monumental link between Gundulić Square and the Church of St. Ignatius. The elegant curves and design of the staircase are heavily influenced by the Spanish Steps in Rome, making it a notable example of Baroque architecture in Dubrovnik. The stairs were built as part of a larger architectural project to create a Jesuit complex, including the Church of St. Ignatius and the Collegium Ragusinum. The Jesuits, a Catholic order known for their focus on education and architecture, envisioned a grand complex that would leave a lasting mark on the city. Construction began in 1662 but was halted by a devastating earthquake in 1667. The project was revived in 1699 under the direction of Andrea Pozzo, who designed the Church of St. Ignatius, completed in 1725. Pietro Passalacqua completed the Jesuit Stairs in 1738. Beyond their architectural significance, the Jesuit Stairs gained global recognition as a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones. The stairs served as the setting for Cersei Lannister's infamous "Walk of Shame" in Season 5, drawing fans from around the world to recreate the scene. Today, the Jesuit Stairs remain a must-visit landmark in Dubrovnik, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the city's rich history and cultural heritage.
