Discover more about Fort Bokar

Fort Bokar, often called Zvjezdan ('starry'), is a stunning example of harmonious and functional fortification architecture in Dubrovnik. Designed by the Italian architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, construction began in 1461 and was completed in 1570. The fortress was a key point in the defense of the Pile Gate, the western entrance to the city. This two-story casemate fort has a cylindrical shape that protrudes from the medieval stone walls. Part of the fort stands on arched supports on a detached rock, allowing seawater to pass beneath it. Fort Bokar is considered one of the oldest casemented fortresses in Europe. Today, Fort Bokar is open to the public and serves as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the fortress and enjoy stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscape. The fort is also a venue for performances of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. It was featured in the popular series “Game of Thrones,” further cementing its place as a cultural landmark.
