Discover more about Bedesten - Old Hagia Nikola Church

Located in the Selimiye quarter of North Nicosia, adjacent to the Selimiye Mosque, the Bedesten stands as a testament to the city's multicultural heritage. Its architecture reflects a captivating blend of Byzantine and Gothic styles, incorporating Renaissance, French, Venetian, and possibly Spanish influences. Originally constructed in the 6th century as a Byzantine basilica, possibly the first Saint Sophia Cathedral in Nicosia , the building's early history is archaeologically confirmed by remnants preserved within its walls. During the Lusignan era, it was expanded with Gothic additions and rededicated to Saint Nicholas in the 12th century. The Venetians further transformed it into the metropolitan bishopric for the Orthodox Church, adding the ornate north facade, a dome, and a large central apse. In 1573, following the Ottoman conquest, the church was converted into a bedesten, a covered market for textiles and other goods. This marked a significant shift in its function, serving as a bustling commercial hub for Turkish, Greek, and Armenian merchants alike. Over time, it also functioned as a grain storage facility and a general goods warehouse. After a period of neglect, the Bedesten underwent extensive restoration between 2004 and 2009, funded by the European Union and the Evkaf Administration. The restoration project, which won the Europa Nostra Award in 2009, focused on preserving the building's historical layers and strengthening its structure. Today, the Bedesten serves as a cultural center, hosting concerts and exhibitions.
