Nový Hrádek Castle, located near Lukov-Znojmo, offers a captivating journey into the past. Established in 1358 by Margrave John Henry of Luxembourg, the castle initially served as a fortified settlement and hunting lodge. Its strategic position high above the Dyje River provided a natural defensive advantage. Over the centuries, Nový Hrádek underwent several expansions and changed hands among various aristocratic families. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortification system was enhanced, and a 'New Castle' was constructed. The castle's ownership shifted frequently, with notable families such as the Althanns uniting it with the Vranov dominion in 1617. The ravages of the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century significantly impacted Nový Hrádek. In 1645, Swedish forces partially demolished the castle, diminishing its military importance. Although some buildings were later utilized for storage and temporary refuge, the castle never fully recovered its former glory. In the 19th century, the Mniszek family renovated parts of the castle for recreational use. In the 20th century, Nový Hrádek experienced further transformations. It briefly served as a hostel before becoming part of a restricted border zone during the communist era. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the castle and the surrounding Podyjí region were opened to the public. Today, Nový Hrádek stands as a national cultural monument within the Podyjí National Park, offering visitors a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. The ruins provide exceptional views of the Dyje River valley and insight into the region's rich heritage.
