Nestled in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, the Soldatenfriedhof Allentsteig is a solemn World War II military cemetery located approximately 500 meters east of Allentsteig, near a military training area. The cemetery was inaugurated on September 13, 1981, and serves as the final resting place for 3,911 soldiers, mostly German, who lost their lives during World War II. The cemetery spans 12,600 square meters and contains nearly 1,000 natural stone crosses crafted from Waldviertel granite. Each cross bears the names and dates of two soldiers. The crosses are arranged in neat rows across four grave fields. An eight-meter-high metal cross stands at the heart of the cemetery. A small entrance building with a wooden shingle roof offers visitors shelter. In 1938, the German Wehrmacht established a military training ground in the area, displacing numerous villages and transforming the landscape. Casualties of war, many of whom died in nearby military hospitals or during training exercises, were laid to rest in this cemetery. Since January 1, 2011, the cemetery has been under the care of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior. Visitors can explore other local attractions, including Allentsteig Castle and the Aussiedlermuseum.
