Discover more about castle ruins Kunžvart

Kunžvart Castle, derived from Königswarte (King's Guard), sits atop Strážný Mountain, near the village of Strážný, on the Czech-German border. At 1,032 meters above sea level, these ruins represent the second highest-located castle in the Czech Republic. Originally constructed in the 14th century under King Charles IV, Kunžvart guarded a branch of the Golden Trail trade route from Vimperk to Passau. Strategically positioned and naturally defended by rock walls and a deep moat, the castle was virtually impregnable. The oldest record of the castle dates back to 1359 when Charles IV granted it to Pešek of Janovice. Over the centuries, ownership transferred through numerous families, but the castle was abandoned in 1547 after serving for 200 years and fell into disrepair after a fire in 1578. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the castle, including a well-preserved, 15-meter-high residential tower. Though the tower itself is not accessible, the ruins offer a unique insight into medieval architecture and the lives of those who once inhabited it. The site also features a ritual flat rock with bowls, believed to have been a site of ceremonies from pre-Celtic times through early Christianity. Hiking trails around the castle provide an immersive experience in the natural beauty of the Šumava region.
