Discover more about Medvědí stezka

Medvědí stezka, or Bear Trail, is a 14 km long, yellow-marked trail in Šumava, dating back to 1967, when it was built as one of the first nature trails in the Czech Republic. The trail's name is derived from the history of the last bear shot in the Šumava region. The trail passes by the Medvědí kámen (Bear Stone), a memorial to this event. The path meanders through magnificent granite rocks of bizarre shapes named poetically as Gorge of Footpads (Soutěska lapků), Logan (Viklan), Giant Cubes (Obří kostky) or Stone Beauty (Kamenná kráska). The rock formations were shaped during the Tertiary period by glacial ages turning interglacial ages, which took 2 million years. Along the way you will find attractions such as the Schwarzenberg Canal tunnel and Jelení jezírko. From the Medvědí vyhlídka (Bear lookout), there are views of Jelenská hora and Stožec. The trail begins in Ovesná and ends in Černý Kříž. The trail is accessible year-round and is intended exclusively for hikers. Part of the trail from Jelení Vrchy to Černý Kříž is suitable for cross-country skiing in good snow conditions.
