Discover more about Andělská Hora - castle ruins

The ruins of Andělská Hora Castle, also known as Engelsburg (Angel's Mountain), stand proudly on a rock formation overlooking the village of Andělská Hora, approximately 7 kilometers southeast of Karlovy Vary. Founded at the turn of the 14th century by Boreš z Rýznburk, the castle served as a protective stronghold for the Rýznburk family's estates. For over two centuries, the castle stood guard until it was conquered and plundered by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War in 1635. Although damaged, it wasn't entirely abandoned until 1718 when a fire consumed its roof. Over time, the castle transformed into romantic ruins, drawing visitors from afar, including spa guests from nearby Karlovy Vary. Johann Wolfgang Goethe celebrated his 37th birthday here in 1786. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including remnants of the sally port and a visible well. The rocky promontory provides unobstructed views of the surrounding hills, making it an ideal spot for photography and leisurely walks. The Gothic parish church of St. Archangel Michael, located in the square below the castle, is also worth a visit.
