The Museum and Gallery of the North Pilsen is located in Mariánská Týnice, a former pilgrimage site near Kralovice. This unique Baroque complex, including the Church of the Annunciation, was designed in the 18th century by Jan Santini Aichel. The site's history dates back to the 12th century when Roman of Týnec bequeathed the land to the Cistercian monastery in Plasy. It became a popular pilgrimage destination, granted special indulgence by Pope Urban III in 1186. After periods of damage and neglect, particularly during the Hussite Wars and later under communist rule, the complex was gradually restored. In 1919, after the church cupola collapsed, the Association for the Preservation of Mariánská Týnice was established to oversee reconstruction. Today, the museum hosts a variety of exhibits, including contemporary art, historical artifacts, and ethnographic displays. Visitors can explore the history of West Bohemia, the cult of the Virgin Mary, and traditional Czech folk customs. The museum also features an exhibition of cast-iron stoves and hosts cultural events like concerts and theater performances. The architecture itself is a blend of traditional and modern design elements, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The refectory is adorned with Baroque frescoes, including depictions of the donation of Mariánská Týnice and the Madonna serving Cistercians. Guided tours are available for groups, and individual visitors can utilize printed guides or digital audio guides in multiple languages.
