History of Bethany Beach

Coastal Lands and Indigenous Heritage

The land around present-day Bethany Beach formed part of the coastal environment inhabited and used by Indigenous peoples, including communities associated with the Nanticoke and Lenape cultural worlds. Bays, tidal creeks, forests and barrier beaches supported fishing, hunting, gathering and movement long before the arrival of European settlers. The area was not an urban centre but a shifting Atlantic landscape shaped by storms, dunes and waterways. Later colonial and American development transformed these environments into farms, roads and resort communities, although the ecological patterns of the coast remain visible in the wetlands and inlets surrounding Bethany Beach.
