The New Haven Green, a privately-owned park in downtown New Haven, Connecticut, holds a significant place in American history and urban design. Established in 1638 as part of the city's original nine-square settlement plan, the Green was envisioned by colonist John Brockett as a central marketplace and gathering space.
Over the centuries, the Green has served many purposes, including a parade ground, a burial ground (with remains still interred), and the site of the meeting house, school, and statehouse. It has been the backdrop for significant events, such as speeches by General George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and rallies during the Civil Rights Movement. The Green also played a role in the Amistad story, as the captives were held in New Haven and exercised on the Green.
Today, the New Haven Green is bordered by College, Chapel, Church, and Elm streets and bisected by Temple Street. It is home to three historic churches built between 1812 and 1816: the Georgian-style Center Church, the Federal-style United Church, and the Gothic Revival Trinity Church, one of the first churches of that style in the United States.
