    If you are driving from Wilmington, take US-202 N. Merge onto Smithbridge Rd and continue for about 1.5 miles. The bridge will be on your right. There is a parking lot available, but it fills up quickly on weekends. Parking is free.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Smith's Bridge using public transportation, take the DART First State bus route 25 towards Wilmington. Transfer to the DART bus route 10 towards Wilmington and disembark at 'Smithbridge Rd & US-202'. Walk approximately 0.5 miles down Smithbridge Rd to reach the bridge. A single fare for DART is $2.00.

Smith's Bridge Covered Bridge, near the Pennsylvania state line in Wilmington, Delaware, is a beloved historical landmark. The 145-foot bridge, with its striking red color, provides a unique blend of history and natural beauty, making it a must-visit spot for tourists. The surrounding lush landscapes and tranquil waters create a picturesque backdrop perfect for photographs and leisurely strolls.The original covered bridge was built in 1839 near a mill operated by Isaac Smith. In 1956, the aging structure was reinforced with steel beams. Sadly, it was burned by arsonists in 1961. A replacement bridge without a cover was erected in 1962. Thanks to the Centreville Civic Association, a replica covered bridge was constructed in 2002, incorporating Burr trusses like the original design but with a steel-reinforced road deck for modern traffic. The reconstruction was awarded a historic preservation award in 2003. The bridge is made of Bongossi, a fire-resistant African hardwood.Today, visitors can appreciate the craftsmanship and design of this bridge. Smith's Bridge is a popular spot for artists and photographers. The nearby Brandywine Creek State Park and First State National Historical Park offer opportunities for hiking and exploring the Brandywine Valley.
