Discover more about Karnak

Karnak stands as the largest religious structure ever built, a sprawling city of temples developed over 2,000 years. Known in ancient times as Ipet-isut (“The Most Selected of Places”), it was the main place of worship for the Theban Triad. Few of Karnak's individual features are unique, but the scale and number of these features are unparalleled. The complex is divided into several precincts, the largest being the Precinct of Amun-Re. Here, you'll find the Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of 134 towering columns adorned with intricate carvings. Other notable structures include the Temple of Ramses III, the Precinct of Mut, and the Temple of Amenhotep IV. Walking through Karnak is a journey through the history of Thebes and ancient Egypt, with each pharaoh leaving their mark on this sacred site. The Opet Festival, an annual celebration of the link between the pharaoh and the god Amun, began at Karnak and ended at Luxor Temple.
