Siwa Nature Reserve, established in 2002, protects a significant portion of Egypt's Western Desert, encompassing approximately 7,800 square kilometers. This reserve showcases a unique desert environment characterized by extreme drought, where only specially adapted plants and animals can thrive. The landscape features a diverse geology, including shifting sand dunes, flat valleys, plateaus, and rocky heights. The reserve's biodiversity is notable, with over 40 species of pastoral and medicinal plants, along with acacia and tamarisk trees. It also supports around 28 species of wild mammals, including endangered ones, approximately 32 reptile species, and 164 bird species. What truly distinguishes Siwa Reserve is the presence of depressions and small oases sustained by groundwater, which allows for good vegetation cover and flowing springs. These springs create lakes and swampy areas that support a variety of wildlife, representing species threatened with extinction.
