Discover more about Vestmanna

Vestmanna, nestled on the west coast of Streymoy Island in the Faroe Islands, is a village steeped in history and natural beauty. Historically a farming and fishing village, Vestmanna has evolved into a popular tourist destination, known as the 'tourist village of the Faroe Islands'. The village's name, Vestmanna, meaning 'Westmen's harbor,' hints at its Viking past, with connections to Norse settlements and possibly even earlier Irish monks. For centuries, Vestmanna was a vital ferry port until the construction of an undersea tunnel. Today, it serves as the primary access point for exploring the majestic Vestmanna Bird Cliffs (Vestmannabjørgini), a short boat ride away. The Vestmanna Bird Cliffs are a natural wonder, featuring towering sea stacks, narrow gorges, and a rich array of birdlife. Boat tours weave through these formations, offering visitors a close encounter with puffins, guillemots, fulmars, and other seabirds nesting on the steep cliffs. The cliffs themselves rise dramatically from the North Atlantic, reaching heights of up to 2,000 feet (609 meters), showcasing stunning basalt patterns formed by ancient volcanic activity. Beyond the cliffs, Vestmanna offers a glimpse into Faroese culture with its Saga Museum, featuring wax figures depicting the islands' history. The village also provides opportunities for hiking, with trails leading to stunning viewpoints and neighboring villages.
