Discover more about Ruotsinsalmi/Svensksund Sea Fortress - Fort Katarina

Fort Katarina, located in Kotka's Katariina Seaside Park, is a fragment of the larger Ruotsinsalmi Sea Fortress, a fortification system constructed by Russia in the late 1700s. This fortress aimed to secure Russia's northwestern border after the Russo-Swedish War. Fort Katarina, along with Fort Elisabeth and Fort Slava, formed a robust defense against Swedish naval ambitions. Construction of the Ruotsinsalmi Sea Fortress began in 1790, encompassing forts, gun batteries, and underwater barriers. Fort Katarina served as the central fortification on Kotka Island, equipped with cannons, administrative buildings, and even a church. A lighthouse, built in 1798, further enhanced its strategic value. Despite its initial importance, the fortress saw limited action and was eventually destroyed during the Crimean War in 1855 by a British-French fleet. Today, the ruins of Fort Katarina are part of the Katariina Seaside Park, offering visitors a chance to explore this unique part of Finnish history. Visitors can explore the area and enjoy the coastal scenery.
