Discover more about Kolvananuuro Nature Trail

Kolvananuuro Nature Trail is a stunning hiking area nestled in the serene landscapes of Eno, near Kontiolahti and Joensuu, Finland. This picturesque trail is renowned for its rugged cliffs, pristine waters, and verdant forests, offering a rich experience for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. As you navigate this natural haven, you'll encounter diverse flora and fauna, immersing yourself in the peaceful sounds of nature. The Kolvananuuro gorge was formed approximately 1.8 billion years ago when the bedrock of the ancient Karelides mountain range fractured and shifted. This created the Kolvananuuro fault, and over millions of years, erosion shaped the kilometer-high folded mountains into the hills seen today, revealing an area with an interesting geological history. The varying temperature and humidity conditions within the gorge have fostered a unique vegetation, where northern and southern plant species coexist. The gorge also provides a habitat for various bird species, including rarer ones like the willow warbler and red-breasted flycatcher. The Uuronreitti Trail, a 4.7 km circular route, leads through the gorge valley, enchanting nature enthusiasts with its untouched beauty and unique species. Allow half a day to fully experience the cool fern groves and streams babbling among the boulders. The terrain can be challenging, with a rocky gorge bottom and significant elevation changes, and the stones can be slippery. The route is marked with orange paint. There are campfire sites and lean-to shelters available. The Kolvananuuro Nature Reserve, established in 1994, spans 1.5km2. The UKK Hiking Trail passes through the reserve on its route from Joensuu to Koli.
