Discover more about Saloinen Local History Museum

The Saloinen Local History Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the past, preserving the cultural heritage of the Saloinen region. Located in Arkkukari, about 7 km south of Raahe, the museum is a collection of 18 historical buildings, each telling a story of the lives and livelihoods of the local people. The museum was established by the Association of Local History and Culture of Saloinen in 1965, with the aim of collecting and preserving the history of the Saloinen region. The association acquired land and buildings, gradually creating a 'mini village' that showcases various aspects of rural life. Among the buildings, you'll find a 19th-century fisherman's house, a forge, a windmill, and various sheds displaying tools, machinery, and horse-drawn vehicles. These exhibits offer a tangible connection to the past, illustrating the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who lived and worked in this region. The museum also houses a collection of spiritual literature by a local writer, providing insight into the spiritual life of the community. The windmill, originally from the Tokola farm, is a prominent feature, while the fisherman's house depicts the cramped living conditions of fishermen in the past. The salt shed, dating back to the sailing ship era, and a two-story loft vandalized during the Finnish War, add to the historical richness of the museum. Visiting the Saloinen Local History Museum is an immersive experience, offering a chance to connect with the traditions and stories of the people who shaped the region. The museum is open during the summer months, allowing visitors to explore the grounds and buildings in a natural setting.
