Discover more about Oulanka National Park

Oulanka National Park, established in 1956 and expanded in 1982 and 1989, lies in the Northern Ostrobothnia and Lapland regions of Finland. Bordering Paanajärvi National Park in Russia, Oulanka showcases a unique blend of northern, southern, and eastern natural elements. The park's landscape is characterized by vast mires in the north and a distinctive river ecosystem featuring rapids and sandy river valleys. The area's diverse temperature ranges create an ideal environment for rare plants like the calypso orchid, the park's emblem. Riverbeds and alluvial meadows provide habitats for rare butterflies, and over 100 bird species nest within the park. Oulanka has a rich history, with the first inhabitants being Sámi people until the 17th century, followed by Finnish settlers. The Finnish Tourist Association played a role in the park's development by maintaining boats on the river and renovating wooden cabins for accommodation. Today, these cabins are available for hikers free of charge, with guidelines for their use and preservation. The park's most famous trail, Karhunkierros (Bear's Trail), opened in 1954 and is an 82km trek that attracts hikers from around the world. Other trails include the Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear's Trail), Hiiden Hurmos Trail, and Könkään Keino Trail, each offering unique perspectives of the park's natural beauty. Visitors can also enjoy canoeing on the Oulankajoki River, cycling on designated routes, and during the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Oulanka Visitor Centre provides information about the park, its trails, and services.
