Discover more about Hôtel de Caumont

Hôtel de Caumont, located in the Mazarin quarter of Aix-en-Provence, is a meticulously restored hôtel particulier (private mansion) dating back to the 18th century. Built between 1715 and 1742, it exemplifies the refined elegance of the era. Originally commissioned by François Rolland de Réauville de Tertulle, Marquis of Cabannes, the building was designed by Parisian architect Robert de Cotte and executed by Georges Vallon. Throughout its history, the Hôtel de Caumont has passed through several prominent families, including the Bruny de la Tour d'Aigues and the Caumonts. In 1964, the city of Aix-en-Provence acquired the building, later housing the Darius Milhaud Conservatory of Music. In 2010, Culturespaces took over the property and transformed it into a vibrant art center. Today, the Hôtel de Caumont hosts two major temporary exhibitions each year, showcasing works by renowned artists from various periods. In addition to the art exhibitions, visitors can explore the mansion's beautifully preserved interiors, including the grand staircase, the historic salons, and the formal French gardens. A film about Paul Cézanne, the famous Aix native, is screened in the auditorium, providing an artistic and historical context. The Café Caumont, with its shaded garden terrace, offers a relaxing respite.
