Discover more about Fontaine des Neuf-Canons

The Fontaine des Neuf-Canons, situated on the Cours Mirabeau, stands as a testament to Aix-en-Provence's rich history and artistic heritage. Constructed in 1691 by architect Laurent Vallon, the fountain replaced an earlier watering hole used by shepherds and farmers for their animals. During that time, an easement authorized herds of sheep on transhumance between La Crau and the Alps to drink there. The fountain derives its name from the nine cannons that spout water into its basin. This design was intended to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The fountain provided a crucial water source for livestock traversing the city. The fountain has a low edge so animals could easily access the water. In 1929, the Fontaine des Neuf-Canons was listed as a historical monument. The fountain was partially damaged during the liberation of Aix-en-Provence in 1944 when an American tank destroyed one of the basin's four lobes. The damaged section was not rebuilt, and its opposite lobe was also removed.
