Discover more about Compagnie du Mont Blanc

The Aiguille du Midi, a 3,842-meter peak in the Mont Blanc massif, stands as the highest point accessible by cable car in the Chamonix valley. For over 60 years, it has been an unmissable destination, offering visitors unparalleled views of the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. The name translates to "Needle of the Mid-day," derived from its position southeast of Chamonix, where the sun passes over its summit at noon when viewed from the church. The journey to the top is a two-stage cable car ride from Chamonix. The first leg ascends to Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 meters, offering hiking trails in the summer. The second leg is a steep ascent to the Piton Nord station at 3,778 meters, known for its lack of supporting pillars. From there, an elevator provides access to the summit terrace at 3,842 meters. At the summit, visitors can experience attractions such as the "Step into the Void," a glass box suspended 1,000 meters above the glaciers. The Aiguille du Midi also serves as the starting point for the Vallée Blanche descent, a 23-kilometer off-piste ski route. The Panoramic Mont Blanc gondola connects the Aiguille du Midi with the Skyway Monte Bianco lift in Italy during the summer months. The Aiguille du Midi cable car was constructed between 1951 and 1955. The installation of the cable cars is a tale of human ambition, engineering prowess, and unwavering determination. The dream of constructing a cable car to the summit of L'Aiguille du Midi began in the early 20th century.
