Discover more about Statue de Pierre l'Ermite

The Statue of Pierre l'Ermite, standing on Place Saint-Michel behind the Amiens Cathedral, honors Peter the Hermit, a key figure in the First Crusade. The statue, created by sculptor Gédéon de Forceville, was inaugurated on June 29, 1854. It portrays Peter as a humble, barefoot religious man wearing a long robe with a cross on his left shoulder and holding a crucifix in his right hand. Peter the Hermit, believed to be from the Amiens area, preached the First Crusade in 1095. The statue was initially planned for Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, but it was ultimately erected on Place Saint-Michel. During World War II, in 1943, German occupation authorities ordered the statue to be melted down. However, the town council and the people of Amiens managed to hide it in a warehouse on Rue Saint-Fuscien, saving it from destruction. It was returned to its place in the spring of 1945. The statue serves as a reminder of Amiens' rich history and the impact of its people on significant historical events. Today, visitors can admire the statue's artistic details and reflect on its historical significance.
