Discover more about Castle of Jonzac

The Château de Jonzac, a prominent landmark in the Charente-Maritime region of France, boasts a rich history spanning nearly a millennium. First mentioned in an 11th-century charter, the castle's strategic location on a rocky promontory overlooking the Seugne Valley has made it a key site throughout history. Initially constructed in 1073, the castle was significantly rebuilt around 1449 following damage from the Hundred Years' War. In 1505, Jean de Sainte-Maure, a local lord, established the Carmelite monastery on the castle grounds. The castle has hosted notable figures, including Louis XIV, the Queen Mother, and Cardinal Mazarin, in 1659. Over the centuries, the castle transitioned through various noble families until the French Revolution. The castle's architecture reflects its long history. The medieval enclosure features a moat, which was filled in the 19th century but reopened in the early 21st century. The imposing entrance gatehouse, dating back to 1549, showcases 16th-century design, while the southwest tower was added in the 17th century. Inside, the courtyard is surrounded by modified buildings, and the north wing now houses the Town Hall, while the south wing accommodates the sub-prefecture. Visitors can explore the castle's museum rooms, wedding hall, and the Napoleon III theater. Today, the Château de Jonzac stands as a testament to the region's history and architectural evolution. Its blend of medieval and later styles, coupled with its role as a civic center, makes it a unique and must-see destination.
