Discover more about Pey Berland Tower

The Pey Berland Tower, an iconic landmark in Bordeaux, stands as the separate bell tower of the Bordeaux Cathedral. Named after Archbishop Pey Berland, who commissioned its construction, the tower was built between 1440 and 1500. The tower's separation from the cathedral was a deliberate architectural choice to protect the cathedral's structure from the vibrations of the bells. The tower exemplifies the Flamboyant Gothic style, featuring intricate stone carvings, pointed arches, and elaborate tracery. A climb to the top of the 66-meter tower rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of Bordeaux. The tower has 231 steps via a spiral staircase. The summit is crowned by a gilded copper statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine, erected in 1863. Throughout its history, the Pey Berland Tower has served various purposes. Initially intended to house the cathedral's bells, it was later used as a dwelling and even a lead shot factory. In 1851, the tower was restored, and bells were finally installed. Today, the Pey Berland Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction, offering a unique perspective on Bordeaux's rich history and architectural heritage.
