Discover more about St. Nicholas Tower

The Saint-Nicolas Tower, along with the Chain Tower, marks the entrance to La Rochelle's Old Port, a lasting testament to the city's power and wealth. Construction on the tower began around 1345 and finished in 1376. This imposing structure served as both a defensive stronghold and a palatial residence. Legend says the fairy Mélusine built the tower, but its construction on unstable ground of mud and oak piles led to a slight tilt, sometimes earning it the nickname "the French Tower of Pisa". The tower stands 38 meters tall (some say 42 meters) and features a complex design with staircases and corridors built into the thick walls. Throughout its history, the tower has served various purposes, including a prison. Today, visitors can explore its many levels, discover its chapel with Gothic features, and walk along the ramparts for breathtaking views of La Rochelle and the Atlantic coast. **Please note:** As of July 2025, the Saint-Nicolas Tower is currently closed to the public for consolidation and restoration work, expected to last until February 2026, with further restoration until 2030.
