Discover more about St. Nicholas Tower

The St. Nicholas Tower is one of three medieval towers guarding La Rochelle. Construction began around 1345, and the tower was completed in 1376. Together with the Chain Tower, it formed a sea gate, capable of blocking access to the port with a large chain. For centuries, the tower served as a defensive structure and a symbol of La Rochelle's wealth. Legend says the tower was built by the fairy Mélusine, who dropped stones from her apron while flying over La Rochelle. The tower is built on unstable ground, composed of mud and oak piles, which caused it to slightly tilt during construction. Reinforcements were made from the second floor onwards to correct the imbalance, but a slight tilt is still visible, earning it the nickname "the French Tower of Pisa". Inside, a labyrinth of staircases and corridors are built into the thick walls. The tower also served as a residence for the captain, his family, and soldiers. The French government classified the St. Nicholas Tower as a Monument historique in 1879.
