Discover more about Eglise Saint Saturnin d'Argelès-Gazost

The Église Saint-Saturnin d'Argelès-Gazost stands as a symbol of renewal and faith in the heart of Argelès-Gazost. The church's story began after the fusion of Vieuzac, Canerie, and Ourout in 1824, which created the municipality of Argelès. With the old church of Ourout in disrepair and Vieuzac no longer a parish, a new church was needed. Construction faced funding challenges until Emperor Napoleon III, during a stay in Saint-Sauveur, provided support. Built between 1857 and 1860, the church was constructed using gray stone from Lourdes and dedicated to Saint Saturnin, the patron saint of Ourout. It was inaugurated on August 15, 1861. Inside, the church features remarkable treasures. A large painting by Guillemet, depicting Sainte Blandine in the lion's pit, was a gift from Napoleon III. The side chapels boast modern altarpieces donated by Canon Charriez from the Sanctuaries of Lourdes. The church also houses three 18th-century bells from the old Ourout church, which locals saved from being melted down for cannons during the French Revolution by burying them.
