Discover more about Ancien Presbytère

The Ancien Presbytère holds a special place in the story of Lourdes, as it was here that Bernadette Soubirous, the young visionary, had her initial meetings with Father Dominique Peyramale, the parish priest. On March 2, 1858, Bernadette, accompanied by her aunts, delivered the Virgin Mary's request: that a chapel be built and processions be held at the site of the apparitions. Later, on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, Bernadette returned to the presbytery with the Lady's declaration: "Que soy era Immaculada Concepciou" – I am the Immaculate Conception. These pivotal conversations between Bernadette and Father Peyramale shaped the future of Lourdes as a pilgrimage destination. Today, the Ancien Presbytère is home to the Maison de l'Europe. Preserved within the building are a section of the old garden wall and the very door used by Bernadette, marked with a plaque commemorating the events that unfolded there. A visit offers a tangible connection to the history and faith that define Lourdes.
